Diavolo takes movement, athletics and daring, reinvents dance and theater, and from it all creates surreal tableaux on a grand scale. The highlight of the evening, Fearful Symmetries, was originally created in a spectacular collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. The World Premiere of Transit Space, comissioned by Penn State University through a Creative Campus Grant, Diavolo collaborates with spoken word artist Steve Connell.

DEVELOPMENTAL TECHNIQUE™ /EXPERIENTIAL ANATOMY AND THE VIEWPOINTS 

Creating an Interdisciplinary Performance Technique Based on the Curriculum of Naropa University’s MFA Theater; Contemporary Performance Program with Wendell Beavers, Director, MFA Theater; Contemporary Performance Erika Berland, MFA Core Faculty

Naropa’s MFA, founded in 2004 by Wendell Beavers, is creating a new paradigm in interdisciplinary performance integrating psychophysical acting, new somatic movement techniques based on the work of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen (BMC®), extended vocal technique(Roy Hart) and Mary Overlie’s Viewpoints. This one-day workshop will cover an introduction to experiential anatomy vocabulary and developmental movement as a foundation for creating personal physical technique. We will also investigate the viewpoints pallet, with an emphasis on the viewpoints of kinesthesia (movement) and emotion.

Wendell Beavers, a dancer and educator, has Chaired Naropa University’s MFA Theater; Contemporary Performance Program since its founding in 2004. He was a founding faculty member and Director (1984-1990) of The Experimental Theater Wing (ETW) at NYU teaching there from 1979-2003 where he was involved in developing the viewpoints in collaboration with originator Mary Overlie.   He was a co-founder and early director of Movement Research in New York dancing there in a variety of groups and venues.  His work has been seen at DTW, Judson Church, Danspace Project, Dixon Place/Vineyard Theater, P.S. 122, ADF Six-Week School and in numerous university venues in the US and Europe.

Erika Berland is a dancer, performer, Certified Practitioner of Body-Mind Centering(R) and licensed massage therapist. Since 2004 she has been instrumental in developing and teaching a comprehensive two year curriculum of somatic training for the MFA: Contemporary Performance program at Naropa University. She also maintains a private practice in movement education, performance coaching and massage therapy in Boulder, CO and New York City. Workshop Description

The Body Electric teaches to the style and performance approach of Not Man Apart’s signature physical theatre productions, imparting our creative shorthand to potential company members so that they are equipped with tools for rapid creation in rehearsal and dynamic presence in performance. 

Part Dance, Part Abandoned, Part Fun, Part Jedi.

John will cover a deep examination of Kin-aesthetic Energy and how it can instantly spark creation and inform improvisation.  The focus will be to amplify skills and develop a practice of anticipating, reading and partner dancing with energy.

Jones will guide participants to feel deeply into another body to sense presence and intention with expanded awareness.  Sharing weight and partnering through elements of Contact Improvisation and acrobatics leads to a safe understanding of rich, free self-expression in partnership.

In this class we will work improvisationally in duets, dancing with, performing for, and witnessing each other in order to identify and encourage the particular physical language of each partnership. We will try on several idioms and then focus on excavating the details within one partnership to create and eventually set or score a phrase, working towards finding specificity in each mini-duet sequence.

Associate Artistic Director Jones Welsh will be teaching Diavolo classes starting with a 4 part workshop in Set Piece Choreography. The class will include a rigorous warm-up integrating elements of yoga, gymnastics, and dance. Then we will approach the body as an extension of yourself, which can change shape and extend to include other objects as extensions of yourself.  (Just as you know exactly where the container of a car is as soon as you sit behind the wheel.)  We will then move into an exploration of different Diavolo set pieces, playing with potential and meaning, and develop short pieces of theatrical choreography based on your own movement discoveries.

Movement Improvisation for Actors, Dancers, and Collaborators

The iDfest is a workshop series spread throughout the month of January in sunny Los Angeles, California. This festival is an exploration and celebration of improvisational movement styles and alternative dance techniques; featuring Contact Improvisation, ensemble movement, and the performance integration of body, sound, voice, and object.
